Dandelion is best known for story telling in Watership Down.But what are his stories about? I will provide a 1-3 sentence summary as to what his stories are about.
The Story of the Blessing of El-ahrairah-The story begins with Frith shaping the world,stars,and animals,who at first were all equal.Then came the many wed El-ahrairah,who was good friends with all the animals until his kind multiplied ate literally everywhere,so the animals were given a gift to be different,the fox,dog,cat,hawk,and weasel were made carnivorous and wanted to kill El-ahrairah and his people.Once El-ahrairah saw what he had done,he hid,and Frith knowing that El-ahrairah had learned his lesson and gave him wits,speed,and cunningness to get away from his newfound enemies.
The Story of the King's Lettuce-When El-ahrairah and his people were down on their luck,their enemis drove them away to the marshes,where everything was too wet.Prince Rainbow came and told El-ahrairah of what he knew about his thievery and vowed never to let them leave until El-ahrairah proved he was an honest rabbit.That's when El-ahrairah came up with the idea to steal the king's lettuce in exchange for freedom,Prince Rainbow agreed to this idea. Then El-ahrairah went to keep his word to Prince Rainbow to get the King's lettuce,he did this by tricking him to believing that an epidemic going on at the time was because the lettuce was poison,with the help of his partner in crime Rabscuttle,he managed to get Prince Rainbow to believe that El-ahrairah was a rabbit of his word after all and let them return home.
The Story of the Trial of El-ahrairah-Upon digging new holes for the warren,Prince Rainbow tells El-ahrairah he can't share a burrow with Rabscuttle due to his tricks.After one too many tricks and the thievery of carrots,,Prince Rainbow holds a trial for El-ahrairah consisting of the enemies of rabbits,however,El-ahrairah has witnesses to back him up,telling the exact details of the stolen carrots.Prince Rainbow declares El-ahrairah innocent,and all the rabbits of El-ahrairah's Owsla and warren are able to rest again,apart from indigestion of the stolen carrots,as they were purple with green spots.
The Story of El-ahrairah and The Black Rabbit of Inle-The king wanted revenge on El-ahrairah for his stolen lettuce,so he kidnapped Rabscuttle.When El-ahrairah noticed Rabscuttle was gone,he went through everything to find them,he even went so far to say he'd drive a bargain with a fox, stoat,or even The Black Rabbit of Inle,realizing what he said, El-ahrairah had a restless night,mostly about The Black Rabbit,he decided to go face to face with him,in a game of the traditional game of Bob-stones(a guessing game as to where the rabbits have to quess the quantity or quality of the rocks used) if El-ahrairah won, his soul would be offered in the exchange of Rabscuttle's life,if The Black Rabbit won,he would take El-ahrairah's whiskers and tail. El-ahrairah won,but The Black Rabbit spared his life as well,telling him his purposes in life,but not much else is known since Pipkin yelled about a fox coming toward the warren.
The Story of Rowsby Woof and the Fairy Wogdog-In a spell of freezing weather, El-ahrairah and Rabscuttle decided to raid the farm for food,but they were scared of the watchdog,Rowsby Woof,a very dangerous dog to all rodents,even moles.El-ahrairah decided to chance it and disguised as the Fairy Wogdog his trick seemed to work,as both Rowsby Woof and his master were confused at the being,so El-ahrairah sent Rowsby Woof away in succesion.So, El-ahrairah and Rabsuttle raided the farm succesfully and brought back food enough to feed themselves in Winter,and were very content.
